An unplanned pregnancy can leave you with a lot to process. You may already have an idea of what you want to do, or you may still be trying to make sense of how you feel. One question you may have is whether you need to tell your partner about your decision.
There is no need to have the conversation before you have had time to understand your pregnancy and think through your own feelings. If you feel safe talking with your partner, sharing what you are experiencing may help you navigate the situation together. If you are concerned about his reaction, however, it is important to put your safety first.
Aspire Women’s Clinic provides no-cost, confidential pregnancy testing and limited OB ultrasounds (upon a positive test result) so you can get important information about your pregnancy. Our team is here to listen, answer your questions, and give you a welcoming place to talk through what comes next.

If You’re Concerned About Your Safety
You do not have to tell your partner about your pregnancy or your thoughts about abortion if doing so could put you at risk of being threatened, controlled, intimidated, or harmed.
If you are worried about how your partner may react, consider talking with someone you trust before starting the conversation. A friend, family member, counselor, advocate, or other trusted person may be able to help you think through your safety and support you.
You can also contact the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 1-800-799-7233 for confidential support and resources.
Your partner may have feelings about the pregnancy, but you should not have to make a pregnancy decision because you are afraid of what someone else might do.
If You Want to Share How You’re Feeling
If you feel safe talking with your partner, you may decide to tell him what you are thinking.
You do not have to have the entire conversation figured out beforehand. You could start by explaining that you are pregnant (if you haven’t already), sharing how you feel, and discussing the concerns that are affecting your decision.
Your partner may feel differently from you. He may be worried about finances, your relationship, parenting, or the future. Listening to his concerns can help you understand his perspective, while still giving yourself room to consider what you want.
Check Your Pregnancy First
Once you have a positive pregnancy test, an ultrasound can provide additional information about your pregnancy, including how far along you are, if there is a fetal heartbeat, and whether the pregnancy is developing inside the uterus.
This information can be especially important in Florida, where abortion is prohibited after six weeks of gestation, with certain exceptions provided by law.
Gestational age is calculated from the first day of your last menstrual period, so knowing how far along you are may be less straightforward if your periods are irregular. An ultrasound can provide an estimate of gestational age.
An ultrasound can also help identify an ectopic pregnancy, which develops outside the uterus and requires medical evaluation and treatment.
