An unplanned pregnancy can bring a mix of emotions. For some, it may feel like an exciting surprise, while for others, it can create uncertainty, stress, and questions about the future. If you’ve experienced an unexpected pregnancy, you may have spent time considering your options, including parenting, adoption, or abortion, or maybe have felt certain abortion was the best choice for your situation.
Ultimately, you made the decision that felt right for your circumstances at the time. What many people don’t talk about, however, is what happens when those feelings change after an abortion. While every person’s experience is unique, some women find themselves processing unexpected emotions, including sadness, grief, or regret. If you’re struggling with some of these feelings about a past abortion, it’s important to know that you’re not alone, and support is available.
Acknowledge Your Feelings
If you’re experiencing feelings of grief, sadness, or loss after an abortion, know that your emotions are valid. Even if you believed abortion was the right decision for your circumstances at the time, it’s okay for your feelings to evolve. Suppressing difficult emotions can make the healing process more challenging. One of the first steps toward healing is giving yourself permission to acknowledge what you’re feeling without judgment and recognizing that your emotions matter.
Join A Support Group
Connecting with others who have had similar experiences can be incredibly helpful. Whether through a local support group, an online community, or a private discussion forum, hearing from women who understand what you’re going through can help you feel less isolated. Sharing your story and listening to others may provide encouragement, validation, and a sense of community during the healing process.
Seek Post-Abortion Counseling
Much of the conversation surrounding abortion focuses on the physical aspects of recovery, such as what to expect after a procedure or abortion pill. Less often, we discuss the emotional healing process that some women may experience afterward.
If you’re struggling with feelings of grief, sadness, regret, or other difficult emotions, it’s important to know that you don’t have to navigate them alone. Healing looks different for everyone, and seeking support is a sign of strength, not weakness. At Aspire Women’s Clinic, we offer compassionate, judgment-free post-abortion support at no cost. No insurance is required. Our certified counselors provide a safe and confidential space to talk about your experience and process your emotions.

What If I Regret a Medication Abortion?
If you have taken the first medication in the abortion pill regimen and are having second thoughts, you may have options. At Aspire Women’s Clinic, we offer a process known as abortion pill reversal (APR), which involves administering progesterone after the first pill (mifepristone) and before the second pill is taken. Research on abortion pill reversal remains the subject of medical debate, but several published studies have reported ongoing pregnancies following abortion pill reversal treatment. One observational study of 754 patients reported success rates ranging from 64% to 68%, depending on the progesterone protocol used, and found no apparent increase in birth defects among babies born after treatment.
Timing is important. If you have taken only the first pill and are interested in learning about your options, seek medical attention as soon as possible.
If you are not in the Southwest Florida, you may also contact the Abortion Pill Reversal hotline, and they can connect you to the nearest participating clinic or pharmacy.
If you have already taken the second medication (misoprostol), abortion pill reversal is generally not considered an option. However, support is still available. If you are experiencing emotional distress, uncertainty, or regret following an abortion, our team can connect you with counseling, support groups, and other resources in a confidential and judgment-free environment.
If you are experiencing heavy vaginal bleeding, severe abdominal pain, signs of infection (such as fever or chills), fainting, difficulty breathing, or any other concerning symptoms, seek emergency medical care immediately or go to the nearest emergency room. If you are experiencing side effects or complications after taking abortion medications, contact the healthcare provider who prescribed the medication or seek prompt medical attention. Your health and safety should always be the priority.
