How Pregnancy Testing Works
Pregnancy testing identifies the presence of human chorionic gonadotropin, or hCG, in your urine. hCG is produced by the cells that eventually form the placenta, and your body begins releasing it shortly after a fertilized egg implants in the uterine lining.
In the earliest weeks of pregnancy, hCG levels rise rapidly, often doubling every 48 to 72 hours. Once hCG reaches a level detectable by the test, the result will be positive.
If levels have not yet risen high enough, the test may return a false-negative result even if a pregnancy is present, which is why timing is so important.
What hCG Actually Does
Beyond being the hormone that pregnancy tests detect, hCG plays a critical role in the earliest stages of pregnancy. It signals the body to stop menstruating, supports the thickening of the uterine lining to house the growing embryo, and helps sustain the pregnancy through its most vulnerable early weeks.
hCG levels continue climbing through the first trimester before gradually leveling off around week 10.
Timing Is Everything
The most accurate time to take a pregnancy test is after the first day of a missed period. Here is what to keep in mind:
- First morning urine gives the most concentrated hCG levels and the most reliable result
- Testing too early raises the chance of a false negative
- False positives are rare but can occur following a recent pregnancy, miscarriage, or if certain medications are involved
- If your period still has not arrived after a negative result, it is worth testing again
Already taken a home test but not sure what to make of it? Coming in takes the guesswork out of it completely.
